Meet Dr. Gerald S. Leischuck

Last Updated 5 Month(s) ago

Dr. Gerald Leischuck, a 1964 graduate and retired educator, enjoyed a career that spanned more than forty years, beginning as a mathematics teacher in rural eastern Colorado and ending after lengthy service in senior administrative positions at Auburn University. In continuous support of teaching, Gerald and his wife Emily initiated various programs to recognize and reward outstanding teachers. To commemorate Gerald's lengthy service to Auburn University and to education, he was awarded the honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa in 2000.

Leischuck served on the teams of six consecutive Auburn University presidents, ending with his retirement as executive assistant to the president and secretary to the board of trustees.

Q: What does a routine day at the Recreation and Wellness Center consist of for you?

Walking has always been my exercising priority, so I start my workout with a 4-mile warm-up on the track, followed by 25 minutes on the rowing machines.

Q: What is your favorite song to work out to?

Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself.” However, I enjoy all of the music; it makes the workout more pleasant.

Q: Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Most definitely a morning person. It is my goal to complete the workout before 11:00 a.m., except on days when the facility opens later in the day.

Q: Do you have any unique abilities?

No unique abilities, just an interested and physically active octogenarian.

Q: If you could be any piece of equipment in The Rec, what would you be and why?

Probably a bicycle, because those using bicycles seem to be enjoying themselves.

Q: If I’m not at the Recreation and Wellness Center, you can find me…

In my backyard seeing about my plants, in my study working on one of many projects in the works, or off on some excursion to the beach or some fun city.

Q: Are there any Rec Center hacks that you can share with us?

Not sure about the meaning of “hacks” so am really unable to answer this one intelligently. However, I do want to complement the “Rec Team” for providing such an inviting, friendly, and pleasant environment for students, faculty, and retirees to exercise.

Q: If you could only eat 3 foods for the rest of your life, what would they be?

I’m a lover of most foods, so this is a difficult one.  Let’s say Grilled Salmon, apples, and anything chocolate.

Q: Finish this sentence: What was I thinking when…?

“….I decided to give up beer?”

Q: What’s your favorite Auburn tradition?

The lighting of the Christmas tree in Samford Park during the holiday season, and Tiger Walk.
