A Lust for Wander

Q&A with John Matthews

John, an Auburn University junior, is pursuing a supply chain management degree in the Raymond J. Harbert College of Business.

What was your first impression of the Recreation and Wellness Center?

Wow! I was so intrigued by The Rec that I had to come back again!

Are you involved in a club sport?

Yes, I am involved with the Auburn Flyers Cycling club team. My team and I competed fall 2015 in the SECCC (South Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference) mountain bike races. We are currently participating in the Spring 2016 SECCC road races.

What is your current job?

I am a rental center attendant with Auburn Outdoors.

What do you consider to be the best part of working at Auburn Outdoors?

The people -- my co-workers and our patrons. The stories of adventures circulating around the shop and being surrounded by equipment that fuels one’s lust for wander are what keep me coming back day after day, even when I’m not working.

If you could be any piece of equipment in the Auburn Outdoors rental shop, what would you be?

A five-person tent. I bet those see some good times.

What does your normal day look like?

Depends on the weather.

What's your personal philosophy on a healthy lifestyle?

A healthy lifestyle is essential because it delivers a sense of satisfaction and euphoria unlike anything else on the planet. My trainer at The Rec, Lily, ensures I achieve these goals.
